Our areas of work

Our work across our 5 areas of intervention

Food security

A project to combat illegal fishing and provide nutritional support with fish products to the people of Buhehe (South Kivu) on Lake Kivu, ensuring good practices and preserving the balance of ecosystems. BIGOMA/EUP works for the sound management of all resources so that they are useful, sustainable and beneficial to the whole community, and ensure food self-sufficiency: reducing dependence on staple imports while increasing incomes in rural communities, improving household living conditions and expanding the domestic market for everyday consumer goods.

Capacity building

Building the capacity of the people of Buzi-Bulenga in new agroforestry techniques and the preservation of natural ecosystems. Despite the potential of the Buzi-Bulenga grouping in Kalehe territory, South Kivu province, its inhabitants’ living conditions remain precarious, dominated by a volatile security situation, a degrading environment, unhealthy politics and an unbalanced economy. This condemns them to a life of hardship and also endangers the environmental heritage described above.

IWRM (Integrated Water Resources Management)

Water issues are nothing new. Water is the third component of primary health care set out at the 1978 Alma-Ata conference, which concluded that an adequate supply of safe water and basic sanitation are the main starting point.

Nutritional support

“The local impacts of declining soil fertility are felt mainly in the incomes of the rural poor and in people’s nutrition.” (Ministry of Agriculture). EUP BIGOMA provides nutritional support to schools in areas long affected by repeated wars, which prevent parents (especially women) from reaching their fields to meet their families’ basic needs.

Rehabilitation of the farming system

As the world’s population grows, so does the number of mouths to feed. Yet agriculture was, and remains, far more than any other human-made ecosystem, the main driver of deforestation.

Sanitation and Public Health

Many households in North and South Kivu struggle to manage household waste because there is no public landfill, and the few companies that collect refuse only work with well-off families in certain upmarket neighbourhoods. In 2019, 500 households in the Nyabushongo neighbourhood (Goma, North Kivu) were made aware of the collection, sound management and disposal of wastewater, refuse and solid household waste. Community work was carried out, and EUP BIGOMA is working with municipal and city authorities to turn this waste into a resource.

Agroforestry and Reforestation

Several reforestation activities involving the local community were carried out in 2018 and 2019 in partnership with the local NGO Life Regain Foundation (LRF): a fruit-tree nursery (572 avocado, 135 mango, 66 lemon and 27 guava trees) in Mugunga; fruit seedlings distributed to 448 beneficiaries in the Lac Vert and Mugunga neighbourhoods; a nursery of agroforestry species (600 Grevillea robusta, 250 Markhamia lutea); and seedlings distributed to 289 beneficiaries in Lac Vert, Mugunga and Kyeshero.

School and Youth Tourism

To educate communities and spark interest in, and love for, natural beauty, we regularly organise hikes and outings to key sites where flora and fauna are showcased, as well as to existing tourist sites. These visits promote good environmental practice in schools (pupils and vocational trainees), among university students and across the wider population.
